La Fine Dell' Universo - Lumen International Arts Residency - Atina, Italy. 2016.
Steven was selected to be one of twenty artists to take part in the 2016 Lumen International Arts Residency in Atina, Italy, The project took place between the 1st and the 15th September and included artists of different disciplines from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, South Korea, UK and USA. Steven travelled by motorbike to Italy to take part in the residency visiting places of interest along the route including; Nice, Pisa, Florence, Tuscany and Abruzzo National Park. He visited Montirchi to see the Madonna del Parto and Arezzo to see further works by Piero della Francesca. In Assisi he visited the Basilica of St. Francis and the work of Giotto.
This two-week residency brought together like-minded artists from multi-disciplines to discuss, share and develop their practice in a relaxed, yet productive environment. The village of Atina, situated 154km from Rome in the province of Frosinone-Lazio, benefits from natural darkness, natural beauty and is a great spot for viewing the Moon, stars and meteor showers.
Drawing inspiration from astronomy, light, the heavens and the universe the artists and designers created works responding to the variety of astronomical sights found there. A large studio space, telescope access, a basic darkroom and visits to Campo Cassino Observatory, Montecassino Abbey (St Benedict), Santa Maria Assunta and CAMUSAC Art gallery provided inspiration.
The work produced was exhibited at the end of the residency in Atina with a follow on show at the Crypt Gallery in London in November 2016.
